How Often to Clean HVAC?
5/23/2023 (Permalink)
We offer heating, ventilation, and air conditioning unit (HVAC) cleaning.
As you embark on cleaning your home, you may forget an important piece of machinery that needs cleaning and maintenance as much as the garage needs cleaning! Don't forget about your HVAC system.
Benefits of Cleaning Your HVAC
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), pollutant levels inside your home can be two to five times higher than outdoors pollutant levels, and the ventilation system is often the largest contributor to low indoor air quality! Many systems go a long time before being inspected and cleaned, so if your HVAC system is like most, your dirty vents might be circulating odors, mold, and irritating dust throughout your home, too.
The EPA reports contaminants or foreign objects such as rodents, insects, dust, dirt, debris, bacteria, mold, and pollen have the ability to enter and collect in your air ducts. So not only is your indoor air quality worsened, but these critters and allergens can cause long-term damages to your HVAC system.
Who Cleans Air Ducts?
Cleaning your HVAC system is no easy task without the right tools, but that’s where a professional in the industry like your local SERVPRO can help. We offer heating, ventilation, and air conditioning unit (HVAC) cleaning. In most cases, air duct cleaning is not essential to a smoothly run home, but after a major air-quality-reducing event like a fire with smoke or suspected mold growth, duct cleaning is absolutely essential to limit the circulation of contaminants throughout the house.
If your HVAC has been operating for some time without attention, it could be circulating the following:
- Dust
- Pollen
- Odors
- Dirt and debris
- Other contaminants
How Does SERVPRO Clean HVAC Systems?
Unlike most duct cleaning services, we use a Portable Ventilation & Air Duct Cleaning System to examine ductwork and sweep clean years of dust and grime.
This system allows us to:
- Remediate Bacteria, Fungi, and Mold
- Reduce Potential for Mold Growth
- Restore Peak Energy Efficiency
- Eliminate Offensive Odors
- Provide Free Written Inspections and Estimates
Our Duct Cleaning Process
- First, we use patented equipment, such as the roto-scraper, which automatically adapts to the duct's shape and diameter while traveling through the duct, removing debris and filth before vacuuming begins.
- Next, a powerful push-pull air delivery and collection system transfers the debris from the ducting to a 16-gallon container.
- Air is filtered through a HEPA filtration system, removing 99.97 percent of particles in the airstream. HEPA filters capture debris and keep the environment clean.
- As an optional process, a sealant or coating product may be sprayed to address odor or microbial concerns.
- Filters will either be cleaned or replaced to remove odor and dirt.
If you have other cleaning needs, we provide various cleaning services. Call (901) 382-0900 today.
Approximate The Distance To Lightning Strike: Know How To Prepare for Storms
5/23/2023 (Permalink)
To approximate the miles a strike is from you, count the seconds between the flash and thunder, divide by 5!
Know How To Prepare for Storms
Lightning causes around 43 deaths in the U.S. annually (based on statistics from 1989-2018). Thankfully, this number is only 10% of the average lightning strikes, the other 90% are left alive, but with various degrees of disability.
Nationally, lightning ranks second only to flash floods in weather-related deaths. Lightning is the most frequent important weather threat to personal safety during the thunderstorm season. Since the threat of lightning is so common, it is typical that many have a lackadaisical approach to protecting themselves. The main reason is that people stay outside too long as thunderstorms approach or form nearby.
For example, during the early part of the thunderstorm season, "dry" thunderstorms are quite common. With these types of thunderstorms, little or no precipitation reaches the ground and, as a result, people are less likely to seek shelter. See lightning facts below for statistics on lightning events.
Did you know?
- The air near a lightning strike is heated to 50,000 ° F, that is hotter than the surface of the sun!
- The average flash could light a 100-watt light bulb for more than 3 months.
- Lightning occurs with all thunderstorms.
While most lightning casualties occur at the beginning of an approaching storm, a significant number of lightning deaths occur after the thunderstorm has passed. If thunder is heard, then the storm is close enough for a lightning strike. DO NOT wait for the rain to start before seeking shelter, and do not leave shelter just because the rain has ended.
A Cool Lightning Hack
You can approximate the distance of lightning!
Did you know you can approximate the distance a storm is from you but counting the time between the flash of lightning and the thunder sound that coincides with the lightning flash? That means you can, at your own home, with minimal supplies, figure out how far a lightning strike is from you!
What You’ll Need:
- You Ears
- Your Eyes
- A watch with a second counter or a phone
From the time you see lightning, it will take the sound of thunder 5 seconds to travel 1 mile. To approximate the miles a strike is from you, count the seconds between the flash and thunder, divide by 5!
For example, if you see a flash of lightning, start a stop watch and hear a large crash of thunder 5 seconds after the flash, your lightning is only 1 mile away! Anything less than 5 seconds is definitely close, so seek cover!
It's not raining, is there still danger from being struck by lightning?
YES! Lightning often strikes outside of the heavy rain area and may occur as far as 10 miles away from any rainfall.
Will the rubber soles of my shoes or tires on my car protect me from being struck?
NO! However, the steel frame of a hard-topped car provides a sort of Faraday Cage or Faraday shield. This increases protection if you are not touching metal. Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside the car than outside. When skies darken, or thunderstorms are forecast, look and listen for increasing wind, flashes of lightning, sound of thunder, and static on your AM radio. While no place is safe from lightning, some places are much safer than others.
Where you can go…
- Get inside a house or large shelter
- Remain clear of tall, isolated trees and telephone poles
- If possible, move to a sturdy building or hard top automobile
- If you are caught outside, away from shelter, you need to get to a place of safety as quickly as possible. If safe shelter is not possible, lie down on low lying ground or in a ditch.
- If boating or swimming, get out of boats and away from the water, get to land and find shelter immediately
What you can do...
- Watch for signs of an approaching thunderstorm
- Postpone outdoor activities if thunderstorms are imminent. This is your best way to avoid being caught in a dangerous situation
- REMEMBER, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to a storm to be struck by lightning

Hurricane Preparedness Checklist
5/4/2023 (Permalink)
Hurricane Preparedness Checklist
Atlantic hurricane season runs roughly from June 1 thru November 30 each year, with September holding the spot for the peak hurricane month. While, technically, hurricanes can wreak havoc any time of the year, this is the time to be on your guard the most. With that said, there are several ways to prepare for these storms during the off-season so you are not caught unawares.
Stock Up on Essentials
You'll want to prepare for the loss of electricity and the ability to cook by stocking up on water, bread, non-perishables, and items you can eat without heating. Also, make sure you have:
- Extra batteries for flashlights or headlamps,
- Portable chargers and cables for cell phones,
- Candles with matches.
Check Your Insurance
If you live in a hurricane-prone region, make sure your insurance covers flooding and other expenses you may incur because of a Texas hurricane.
Make a Video of Your Home
If your home is damaged from hurricane winds and water, a home inventory video will help prove the pre-storm state of your home and make insurance claims processing easier. It would also be beneficial to make electronic versions of important documents related to your home and your personal information in case the originals are destroyed in the storm. Include digital files of documents such as your:
- Birth certificate
- Driver's license
- Home's deed
- Social security card
Protect Your Property
Install hurricane shutters or plywood of at least 3/4 inches in thickness. You may need to install hurricane clips to secure the roof of your home to the walls. This is important in areas that may receive a direct hit, and install foot and head bolts on all doors.
Make an Evacuation Plan
When it is time to evacuate, go. Make a plan for where you and your family will stay at least 50 miles from your Texas home. If you can, pre-pack a bag before the threat of an Atlantic hurricane is severe. Load it with clothes, blankets, food, water, electronics, and important papers or photos.
Use These Tips
Don't Take Risks. Ultimately, people are more important than things. People hurt in hurricane weather evacuate late or stay in their homes altogether. Be wise and get out early. Prepare in order to mitigate panic and this kind of risky behavior.

BBQ Fire Safety
5/16/2022 (Permalink)
Follow These Tips to Avoid a Barbecue Fire
The arrival of nice weather calls for grilling out with friends and family. Unfortunately, a grill fire is a real safety hazard, and in the right circumstances, a fun get-together can turn into a disaster in a hurry. You can avoid a barbecue fire by following these tips:
- Keep the Grill in a Safe Location
Keep the grill outside on a level surface at least 10 feet from buildings and other flammable objects. Never grill under an overhang or in an enclosed area. Be sure to monitor it closely until it cools.
- Keep Children and Pets at a Distance
Children and pets should stay at least three feet away from the grill. Ensure that pets on tie-downs cannot reach the grill; they can wrap their line around the grill and pull it over. It will keep them at a safe distance if a grill fire occurs.
- Be Mindful of Loose Clothing
Make sure that you wear appropriate attire when you grill. You can tie back everything with an apron. Use long tongs and spatulas for added safety and wear heat-resistant grill gloves.
- Use a Chimney Starter
A chimney starter is a much safer option than lighter fluid. It will also light the coals more evenly.
- Practice the Two-Zone Method
This simple, versatile method creates a much safer grilling experience. Put the hot charcoal on one side of the grill and leave the other side empty. If a flare-up occurs, move the food to the other side until the flame subsides, then move it back to continue cooking. The two-zone method can improve your food quality because it creates a searing side and another side for flame-free slow cooking.
Keep a fire extinguisher near. Do NOT use water; it can make a grease fire flare up. Instead, close the grill lid until the outbreak subsides. If your house sustains fire damage or smoke damage from a grill fire, SERVPRO of Lake Arlington can return it to its original state.

How to Reduce Pet Stress During a Storm: Evacuation Plan
4/8/2022 (Permalink)
Follow these simple measures to reduce your pet’s stress.
Plan For Your Pets
Inclement weather or fires can happen with or without notice. Creating an emergency plan can help prevent damage to your home and belongings and protect you and your loved ones - including pets! When putting a plan together, it’s important to plan for their needs as well.
Make an Evacuation Plan
Remember, if you must evacuate due to an emergency, the area is likely not suitable for your pets either. Your evacuation plan should consider where your pets will be taken, if not kept with you, and how best to transport them. Make a list ahead of time of pet friendly hotels or friends’ houses along your evacuation route and near your final destination. Know that some hotels and shelters do not accept animals.
You also might want to build an emergency travel kit for your animals. This will save time and worry when you must evacuate.
Items to include in your pet's emergency kit:
- A completed Emergency Pet Passport containing important information like your pets’ veterinarian contact info, medical needs, license/chip info, photos, etc.
- Leash, harness, and carrier with blanket to transport animals
- A few portions of a suitable non-perishable food, water bowl, bottled water, and can opener
- Cat litter and pan or bags for excrement
- Medications
- Toys
Don’t Have to Evacuate?
If evacuation is not necessary, there are still some things you can do to reduce your pet’s stress in an uncomfortable situation like a thunderstorm.
Pet Stress Symptoms
Pets may exhibit signs of stress and anxiety that can be alleviated by simple measures. Some of these symptoms include whimpering, hiding, pacing, or shivering. These symptoms may be caused by a variety of factors including pets’ greater sensitivity to sounds and air pressure.
As stress increases, symptoms may become more severe. Follow these simple measures to reduce your pet’s stress:
- Remain calm as an owner
- Create a comforting space for them in a smaller room like a closet or under a blanket
- Close blinds and curtains
- Keep them in their normal routine, if possible

How to Remove Odors from Your Arlington Home
3/29/2022 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Lake Arlington Removes Odors from Your Home
SERVPRO of Lake Arlington Removes Odors from Your Home
Odors from smoke, pets, decomposition, and mold can cause lingering odors in your home or business. A simple surface clean doesn't permanently remove offensive odors left by smoke, mold, and other sources. However, with technicians certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration (IICRC), SERVPRO of Lake Arlington provides specialized services that can eliminate those foul smells.
Our professionals don't cover up lingering odors with a fragrance. We seek out the odor's source.
Once the source is found, we use SERVPRO's proprietary line of cleaning products to treat and prevent the odor from returning. Any restorable item in affected areas will be cleaned and deodorized professionally. These items can include:
- furniture
- draperies and upholstery
- electronics
- art
- flooring, walls, ceilings
- HVAC air ducts & more
Along with our proprietary line of cleaning products, we use various techniques and equipment that are capable of penetrating surfaces to thoroughly neutralize unpleasant odors.
Tools We Use:
- Ozone Generator: The Ozone Generator is one of the quickest ways to eliminate odors from a home or office. We use the Ozone Generator to oxidize odor and eliminate odors from mold, mildew, pets, nicotine, smoke, and more without chemicals. While the room is being treated, a person should not occupy the space. However, the generator works quickly.
- Hydroxyl Generator: The Hydroxyl Generator has several benefits that the Ozone Generator does not. The main advantage is that the treated room can be occupied during the deodorization process, though it does work more slowly. It's used to treat fire, smoke, biohazard jobs, water damage, crime scene situations, and animal odors.
- Air Filtration Device: This piece of equipment, also known as an air scrubber, is used to remove airborne contaminants during water, fire, smoke, mold, and sewage restoration work. These work by pulling air through a HEPA filtration mechanism to remove airborne particles, helping clean the air and remove odors.

Smoke and Soot Dictate Cleanup Practices After Fire Damage
3/6/2022 (Permalink)
It is wise to contact a professional in the fire damage restoration industry, like SERVPRO of Lake Arlington at (817) 460-7766.
Professionals Describe the Different Types of Smoke
Suppose you ever suffer from a structural blaze inside your Lake Arlington home. In that case, it is always smart to consult a professional when going about cleanup and restoration.
A professional will know to use different chemicals and techniques when removing residues left behind, based on the smoke type. In most situations, smoke and the soils it leaves behind can be classified into one of the following four categories of smoke and soot damage. Knowing what type of smoke was present helps the technician pick the best method to remove soot residues on the various surfaces of your building materials and contents.
Category No. 1 - Dry Smoke
Most fires go through stages of creating both wet and dry smoke. However, usually fires will have more of one type than the other. Dry smoke is created by fast-burning, oxygen-rich burns. Dry smoke is also usually created when organic materials like wood, paper, or natural fabrics burn.
Category No. 2 - Wet Smoke
Whether a fire produces a majority of wet or dry smoke depends on the amount of oxygen present, the combustion rate, and the type of substance that is burning. When the fire is starved of oxygen and burns at a lower temperature, it produces wet smoke. Wet smoke is also created when synthetic materials such as rubber or plastic burn. Wet smoke usually adheres strongly to surfaces and is difficult to remove.
Category No. 3 - Protein Residues
Protein residues can be found any time products such as meat, poultry, or fish burn. These residues leave behind a yellow or amber discoloration, but they can sometimes be clear and hard to see on a surface. Protein residues leave behind strong odors making deodorization the biggest issue when dealing with them.
Category No. 4 - Fuel Oil Soot
Furnace puff-backs can create fuel oil residues that consist of dust particles from the ventilation system and fuel oils that did not burn all the way. This type of soot usually has a gray or black color and can consist of large or small particles. Often, the electrically charged ions form formations in corners that resemble spiderwebs and can smear readily if not vacuumed and sponged off correctly.
If a fire ever ignites inside your home, it is wise to contact a professional in the fire damage restoration industry, like SERVPRO of Lake Arlington at (817) 460-7766.
What Is Cat 3 Water Loss? What About Cat 1 and Cat 2?
3/6/2022 (Permalink)
If you experienced a natural flood or sewage break at your home, you may have been told your property sustained Cat 3 (Category 3) water damage. So what is Cat 3 water damage? And what are the other 2?
Water Damage Categories
They are classified as follows:
- Category 1 damage, also known as “white water” (clean water)
- Category 2 damage, also known as “gray water” (clean water that sat for a while)
- Category 3 damage, which is known as “black water” (usually from flood water)
Category 3 water is not only contaminated, but it can also cause damage to your home. Professionally trained technicians can, fortunately, help you clean and decontaminate the building and items after a Cat 3 water incident.
Cleaning Procedures
When facing water damage caused by a contaminated liquid, your safest plan usually involves contacting a local restoration company. Professionals are trained to arrive quickly, assess damage accurately, and work safely and efficiently to clean, restore and construct your property.
After the assessment, the following cleaning steps typically occur:
- Removal of water
- Humidity reduction and drying of wet surfaces
- Sanitation and cleaning of damaged areas
- Remediation of damaged property through deep cleaning and reconstruction
The professional you choose may also offer digitization services for wet financial documents or photographs that need to be preserved. Additionally, trained technicians on the scene may have suggestions for a preservation method or a long-term storage situation for items that are priceless and irreplaceable, yet not entirely salvageable.
Being Prepared
Help us help you persevere in the face of such a nightmare. SERVPRO of Lake Arlington is a local professional in the cleaning, restoration, and construction industry. Our technicians follow OSHA and EPA protocols to help transform an unsafe environment back into a clean, safe home or business. For a free estimate, call us today at (817) 460-7766.
7 Steps to Preventing Water Damage While Away
3/6/2022 (Permalink)
7 Steps to Preventing Water Damage While Away
According to a study done by the Insurance Institute, homeowners' highest insurance claims are water damage. Leaky or busted pipes and appliances cause millions of dollars in damage during freezing weather and storms. Leaky pipes don't take a vacation when you do and can burst, generating hundreds of dollars of repairs. Prevent water damage while your on vacation by using this checklist:
Step 1. Check for Leaks Before Going on Vacation
Check pipes under your sinks and the water heater for any rust, cracks, or damage. You should check the seals by your windows to make sure there are no cracks. Additionally, check the exterior of your house and see the condition of your roof shingles. If any show damage, getting them replaced before leaving for vacation is a good idea.
Step 2. Inspect Your Major Appliances
You must inspect the hoses connected to essential appliances in your home, such as dishwashers, washers/dryers, and refrigerators.
Step 3. Clear Out Your Gutters
Make sure to get any debris out of your rain gutters before leaving for vacation. This way, you won't have any blockages that can cause overflows which can lead to foundation problems and water damages while you're away.
Step 4. Inspect Your Sump Pump
Make sure it is in good condition and clear any debris from clogging the pit. Run a few tests, listen to the sounds it makes, and ensure that the pump's water is going outside. Install a battery-powered backup in case there is a power outage while you're away.
Step 5. Insulate Exposed Pipes
If you plan on being away from your home during the winter, it can be a good idea to insulate any exposed pipes. This will prevent them from freezing while you are away.
Step 6. Get Someone to Check on Your Home
Call a friend or hire a professional house sitter to check on your home every week while you are gone. Instruct them to ensure that the heat is always on if your vacation is during the winter. Also, show them where the water main is in case of an emergency.
Step 7. Ease Your Mind By Turning Off the Water
Lastly, if you cannot find someone to check on your home, you should turn off the water main. Drain the pipes so that they do not freeze or burst during the colder months. To do this, run the water and flush your toilet after you turn off the water. Open the cabinets under your sink to let the warm air surround the pipes.

Prepare Your Home for Winter Weather
2/7/2022 (Permalink)
Prepare your Lake Arlington home for winter weather:
Tips to Prepare Before Winter Weather
- Don't let your leaves stay put! This can cause mildew growth and smother your yard. Rake them up and toss them or mix them into your garden beds.
- Keep your firewood stacked away from your home because creepy crawlers love cozy wooden homes! We recommend keeping your woodpiles at least 6 feet from your homes.
- Drain external water hoses and store away for the winter season so they don't freeze.
- Let the sunshine in! Opening your blinds or curtains can cut costs for electric bills. Sunshine also boosts your mood, so let the rays in!
In the Midst of Winter Weather
- BE WEARY OF ICICLES! As beautiful as icicles are to look at, they can be an indicator of a major problem. The melting of snow on your roof can refreeze in the gutter, eventually forming ice dams which prevents the draining of water. The overflow of this melting and refreezing causes icicles. The water will eventually try to find an escape and seep into small cracks in the roof resulting in water in your attic and possible, subsequent mold damage.
- DO NOT pour hot water on your frozen car windshield. This can cause your windshield to crack! Instead, use an ice scraper and a commercial de-icing spray (rubbing alcohol will work too).
If you find water or mold damage in your house this winter, call your local SERVPRO of Lake Arlington for a FREE estimate. We are Here to Help® (817)-460-7766.
Do You Have an Emergency Kit for Severe Weather?
2/6/2022 (Permalink)
Severe weather is unpredictable and safety is important, no matter the season! Be prepared, following these readiness tips to guide you, no matter what type of severe weather you may encounter.
Have a Weather Radio
Weather radios are the most reliable way to receive notifications of severe weather in your area in an emergency. Although cell phones, weather apps, social media, and wireless emergency alerts (WEA’s) are what the majority of us depend on for information, they can be interrupted during severe weather. Be sure to properly program your weather radio so you only receive the alerts you want for your county.
Keep an Emergency Supply Kit
An emergency kit can be a lifesaver. Most emergency management agencies recommend supplies for up to three days. The following is a list you can use as a guideline for mitigating disaster effects:
Personal Items:
- Water – 1 gallon per person per day

Why is My Smoke Alarm Beeping?
2/6/2022 (Permalink)
In addition to potentially causing significant fire damage, flames and smoke can endanger the lives of everyone inside your home. A properly functioning fire alarm can alert you to danger and help save lives. For this reason, every household should have this lifesaving device.
Sometimes, however, a smoke detector may act sporadically, chirping loudly or going off despite the absence of smoke. Often, there is a simple explanation for this erratic and—let’s be real, annoying!—behavior.
Why Is My Smoke Alarm So Annoying?
- Weak Battery
Batteries have a limited lifespan. A chirping alarm may indicate that your device needs a new battery.
- Improperly Installed Battery
A loose battery or terminal obstruction may cause your fire alarm to chirp intermittently. Use the self-check button on your smoke alarm to ensure the battery works after installing.
- Dirty Sensing Chamber
Dust and dirt can sometimes obstruct the sensing chamber, resulting in a false alert. To help prevent this problem, you should routinely wipe your detectors with a dusting cloth.
- Interference From Steam
Steam can also interfere with your detector’s sensing capability. This may be a particularly challenging problem for units located near bathrooms. To help reduce the likelihood of an inadvertent alert, close the bathroom door while showering and turn on the fan.
- Interrupted Power Supply
An interrupted power supply may also cause erroneous beeping. You should examine each detector’s wiring for loose connections. If you notice lights dimming spontaneously, especially when an appliance is in use, contact a licensed electrician to help you inspect your home’s wiring.
- End of Lifespan
Did you know your smoke detector can essentially expire? The average lifespan for most smoke detectors is 8 – 10 years. After this period, the unit’s sensing capacity may diminish, reducing its effectiveness. If an older device is chirping, it may be time to replace it with a new one.
A fire alarm may not spare your home from a destructive fire or smoke damage, but this valuable safety device may one day save your life. To help safeguard your well-being, you should promptly investigate a chirping detector and replace batteries, or the entire unit, as needed.

What is Wet and Dry Smoke?
2/6/2022 (Permalink)
Did you know different types of smoke damages emerge based on the type of material burning? These smoke types determine the measures professional fire restoration technicians take when cleaning up after a fire. We break down the types.
Wet and Dry Smoke?
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, a professional like SERVPRO of Lake Arlington tests the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pre-testing.
Wet Smoke:
Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke:
Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises, therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue:
Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extremely pungent odor.
It's important to survey all areas of a property because every part has the potential for damages. Smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure, and smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
Our Fire Damage Restoration Services
Since each smoke and fire damage situation is different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action to restore your property to its preloss condition. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

How to Protect My Business from Utility Room Fire or Electrical Fire?
2/6/2022 (Permalink)
A business is affected in a uniquely difficult way when the business suffers fire damage. The damage leads to loss, but it destroys the infrastructure for recovering that loss. For example, when a restaurant’s utility room or electrical system catches fire and burns a facility, the income the owners could have made to pay for that loss is uprooted, having a chilling effect on a commercial property.
This highlights the importance of buying the right insurance.
In an effort against fire loss, most buildings have measures to protect the property from utility room fire or electrical fire loss. A fire sprinkler system is one of the strategies that play an essential role in fire suppression.
A Sprinkler System’s Job
This system has sensors that detect a change in room temperature. If the temperature reaches a critical level, the alarm turns on, the valves open, and water jets are sprinkled in the rooms. The fire sprinkler system is the first line of defense against fire before the arrival of backup, like firefighters.
You’ll Need More Than a Sprinkler System
The fire sprinkler system alone may not curb utility room fire or electrical fire outbreak from spreading. If no secondary response team comes quickly to help the sprinkler system, the fire can easily consume the building. Calling 911 should be the first thing you do after exiting the building.
Did You Think About Water Damage?
After the fire, the reality of what transpired inside becomes clear. Apart from the fire damage, there is soot damage, water damage, and visible smoke damage. The fire hose pressure can destroy contents and walls, too.
This devastating scene can only be properly rectified by professionals who are familiar with commercial fire damage restoration.
Professionals Know What To Do
Hiring professionals for fire restoration gives peace of mind. Professional commercial fire damage services usually take a record of the items destroyed and remaining. SERVPRO of Lake Arlington repairs and cleans content that can be salvaged. They wrap and store those items and appropriately dispose of the rest. They also find out where data backups could be salvaged, such as the computer hard drives.
The soot damage, water damage, and smoke damage are some of the things that must be cleaned fastest to restore the interior. Soot damage is cleaned using a dry brush. Water is drained and vacuumed from the rooms. This drying prevents mold from growing. The smoke is pulled from upholstery and other areas that could have absorbed odor. After the main cleaning is done and our construction team has rebuilt any remaining damage, items that underwent repair are brought back.
Your business will emerge triumphant over fire damage if you use professional fire restoration services like those of SERVPRO of Lake Arlington.
Does Your Lake Arlington Business Need Board-Up Services?
2/6/2022 (Permalink)
If your business was affected by storm or fire damage that results in an opening in your building, you might need emergency board-up services. Any opening in the structure needs to be boarded appropriately to protect the building from the weather and illegal entry. Your insurance policy also requires you to be proactive in protecting your home or business after any damage has occurred. Otherwise, the insurance company could account for any further/secondary damage to the structure as negligence.
Not every situation requires the most extensive board-up that the U.S Fire Administration has in their board-up procedure manual, such as after a fire where the entire home is destroyed and is considered a complete loss. While each emergency board up is different, SERVPRO of Lake Arlington is here to help.
Let's take a look at how to properly board up a structure after the damage has caused an opening in the building.
How Much Storm Protection Does Your Business Need?
- Openings in the basement, first floor doors, windows, and any entry point accessible from a porch, fire escape, or other potential climbing points require additional security measures. Openings should be barricaded with plywood, 2x4s, bolts, and nails.
- Openings at least 10′ from ground level, which is not accessible from a porch, fire escape, roof, or other climbing points, can be secured with nails in each brace and every 12″ around the perimeter. The plywood should be fitted for these openings so that it rests snugly against the exterior frame, butting up to the siding on wood frame buildings and up to the brickwork on brick buildings. It may be necessary to remove the staff bead so that this fit can be flush and tight.
How to Board-Up a Commercial Building
- Cut plywood to fit over the window and door openings, flush with the outside of the molding.
Note: For buildings with a metal door and window frames, the alternative is to cut the plywood and 2x4s to fit the door frame inside buffed up against the band molding. - Cut the 2x4s to fit the horizontal dimension of the plywood. You will need two 2×4 exterior and two interior braces for each window and three sets for each door.
Note: For buildings with metal doors and window frames, the 2x4s for the outside will be cut to the plywood dimensions, fitting inside the door frame, against the band molding. The 2x4s will be cut to the outside dimension of the door or window frame for the inside. - Next, pre-drill 3/8th inch holes in the plywood and the braces.
- The holes will be placed approximately 1/3 of the brace's length from each outside edge of the door and window jam.
- The two window braces will be placed 1/3 of the distance from the top and the bottom of the window.
- The three-door braces will be placed; one in the center of the doorway and one half the center's distance to the top and the bottom of the doorway.
- Place the plywood over the exterior opening and nail it to the frame.
Note: For metal frames, place the plywood and braces inside the frame against the band molding. - Place the 2×4 braces over the interior and exterior of the door or window.
- Place the large washer over the carriage bolt and place the bolt through the holes.
- Place the washer and nut inside and tighten securely. Torque the nut so that it slightly compresses the interior 2×4.

4 Things to Know About Standing Flood Water
2/6/2022 (Permalink)
Call SERVPRO of Lake Arlington for additional information regarding storm damage.
After a flood, you may wonder what to do next. It's normal to feel lost, confused and stressed after a flood impacts your area. How do you prepare for water damage or contaminants in black water? Here are four aspects of standing flood water you should know about.
1. Water Can Be Electrically Charged
Some overflow waters can be electrically charged. If there is working power in your home, you need to take the utmost care to ensure the water isn’t pulsing with electricity. When it comes time to have flood water restoration professionals help you, your safest option is to turn off all power until you or they have finished cleanup.
2. Pathogenic Contamination
Blackwater is a major category of consideration for standing water, particularly after a backed-up sewer or storm. This floodwater occurs after 24 hours and is considered to be full of pathogenic contaminants. This water can be full of garbage, mold, and even sewage.
3. Look Out For Mold Growth
Mold can grow in as little as 24 hours and as late as 72 hours after the water has been stagnant. Warm, moist areas tend to be perfect for mold growth. After a flood, one of the most common types of damage people have to deal with is the mold that grows on everything from furniture and other items in the house—to walls themselves.
4. Get That Water Out
Removing the water should always be the first step when it comes to cleanup. It’s essential to make sure the black water is taken out as soon as possible before it ends up further damaging your home. Never let water sit in your home; use a professional to help clean it up.
The damage caused by a storm can be intense, and it can be challenging to know which steps to take when you have extensive water damage. You don't have to go through this process alone. Call SERVPRO of Lake Arlington at (817) 460-7766 for additional information regarding storm damage. Our professional team will help you every step of the way. We really are Here To Help®.
Space Heater Safety and Fire Prevention Tips
2/3/2022 (Permalink)
Stay safe when using a space heater and remember, all heaters need space.
Cold temperatures inevitably make us want to cozy up under a blanket and crank up the heat, but before you bring the space heater up from the basement to get extra toasty, consider these safety and fire prevention tips. According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment is the leading cause of all house fires.
Space Heater Safety First!
SERVPRO of Lake Arlington has compiled some space heater safety and fire prevention tips to help you stay warm, but most of all, to keep you and your home or office safe from fire damage.
- Keep 3 feet of distance between your space heater and anything that can burn, including people!
- Never plug your space heater into a power strip; always plug it directly into the wall.
- Turn off and unplug the heater whenever you leave the room, especially when leaving for the day or going to bed.
- Always place your heater on a flat surface, away from foot traffic.
- Educate your family and coworkers about the dangers of space heaters.
- Keep the heater away from wet areas. This includes bathrooms, basements, and even wet hands and materials.
Buy the Right Heater
- Check to see if your heater has a seal marking that it’s been tested by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory.
- Purchase a space heater that is suitable for the size of the room you would like to heat. Use small heaters for small spaces, and large heaters only for big, open spaces. Using a small heater in a large space will cause the heater to overwork and reduce its lifespan.
- Know your heater’s wattage. Higher wattage = higher energy output. Low wattage = less energy.
- Choose a heater with an automatic shut-off that engages if the heater is knocked over or overheats.
- Know about the different types of space heaters: oil or water-filled radiator heaters, fan-forced heaters, ceramic heaters, and infrared heaters.
Using these space heater safety and fire prevention tips will help prevent fire damage in the home and workplace. If you have any questions about fire prevention or if your property experiences smoke or fire damage to your home, call your local professionals at SERVPRO of Lake Arlington for assistance. We’re available 24/7 at (817) 460-7766.
Restoring Your Lake Arlington Property After a Water Damage
2/1/2022 (Permalink)
Whether you come home to a large leak or a small one, there is cause for concern. While the apparent and obvious water damage is troublesome on its own, the water damage that is unseen is the most concerning.
In tough situations like water damage, SERVPRO of Lake Arlington can help. We have highly trained technicians with knowledge and tools to make sure your property is cleaned efficiently and well. We work quickly to assess each unique situation and isolate the damaged area. From ongoing training to regular IICRC-industry certification, our staff is equipped and qualified to restore your property.
Not a DIY Project
We suggest you avoid cleaning the mess yourself to avoid improper drying and potential mold problems. Flooding and water damage events are often complex with issues that require a knowledgeable and flexible response. There are some preventative measures you can and should take, though.
Protect you home from leaks:
- Maintain roof repairs and regular maintenance. Clean gutters and spouts twice a year to maintain drainage, and install gutter guards to keep unwanted foliage out.
- Keep up with HVAC maintenance.
- Monitor your water bill. If your bill seems higher than normal, you may have a slow leak in a common place like an indoor or outdoor faucet or appliances. Give your home a quick look. If you do not find a leak, call an expert to inspect hidden water lines you may have missed.
- Re-caulk cracks in and around your house. Check windows, as they are culprits for water collection.
Why SERVPRO of Lake Arlington?
Our professionals are trained to be mindful of legal and environmental concerns and strive to fully restore the damaged area while working within your budgetary constraints. We understand that every hour spent cleaning up is an hour of lost revenue and productivity. So when an emergency situation arises in your home or business, give us a call and we'll be there with the help you need.
If you experience water damage while you are away from your home, contact SERVPRO of Lake Arlington as soon as possible at (817) 460-7766.
What to Do If You Suspect Mold in My Home or Business?
1/31/2022 (Permalink)
If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.
Do:
- Avoid affected areas as much as possible.
- Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
- Contact a professional for mold remediation services.
Don’t:
- Don’t touch, disturb, or blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
- Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
- Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold—it doesn’t remove the mold, it only removes the appearance of it.
Our Mold Remediation Services
SERVPRO of Lake Arlington specializes in mold cleanup and restoration, in fact, it’s a cornerstone of our business. Our crews are highly trained restoration professionals that use specialized equipment and techniques to properly remediate your mold problem quickly and safely.
If You See Signs of Mold, Call Us Today at (817)-460-7766!
Mold Remediation Procedure in your Texas Home
When a homeowner encounters a problem with mold growth in their Texas home, they should call a mold inspection service to administer air quality testing, which will determine the severity of the problem. After the inspection, a mold remediation can begin.
Initial Assessment
When a mold remediation procedure is started, an initial assessment is administered. This should be done by a specialized technician not affiliated with the mold remediation company for the client’s protection. This service detects mold spores and growth in an area. Once the air quality test has been finished, a homeowner will be given a set of written instructions for proper mold removal called a protocol. The mold removal protocol encompasses specific guidelines and should be given to a mold remediation company, like SERVPRO of Lake Arlington, to execute the mold removal, cleaning, and cleanup.
Mold Removal
To ensure mold spores do not spread, our mold remediation technicians will establish barriers throughout the home. The technicians will then remove any porous surfaces that have tested positive for mold, which could include drywall, carpet, carpet padding, and insulation. Mold remediation specialists will then clean and sanitize all surfaces followed by an application of an anti-fungal paint or product.
Air Scrubbing and Clearance Testing
Air scrubbing and clearance testing are the final steps in the mold remediation process. When all of the contaminated materials have been removed from the home, the technicians will reduce mold spores in the air by using air scrubbers which effectively restore healthy air levels within the home. After the process has been completed, the technicians will perform a final clearance test to the home. A SERVPRO technician then will sign a document that certifies the mold remediation has been administered and was successful, which is the final step in the procedure. The homeowner can safely return to his home and enjoy the fresh, clean air.
Mold Removal in Midland Texas: A Success Story
1/31/2022 (Permalink)
How We Removed the Mold in Midland Texas Home
A pipe burst through a multi-million dollar Texas home while a family was on vacation. The flooding caused category 3 water damage that led to mold. Our team was there for about 3 weeks as we began the mold remediation processes.
We began the process by packing out all contents of the affected rooms in the house and moving them to an unaffected area.
Once all of the contents were squared away, our team began the demo. Our team pulled and saved granite countertops, cabinetry, and doors. Our crew also saved all of the hardware in the home to be reused. We then pulled all of the floorings from the affected areas and cut the walls to pull drywall, insulation, and foam.
Our team cleaned up after the demo and HEPA-vacuumed all surfaces until it was clean from dust, dirt, mold spores, etc.
Lastly, our crew sprayed anti-microbial on all surfaces and fogged the home. We passed the mold test and were able to say our work was complete. The homeowner was very happy with the hard work from our team and was most impressed we were in and out in under 3 weeks!
Do You Have Mold In Your Home?
There are many mold scares in the United States because it can cause health effects, destroy a house, and be very hard to remove. The way mold spreads is through spores in the air, which does not always mean it will lead to a mold epidemic in your home. Mold can not grow on dry surfaces, the only way it can spread is on wet surfaces. Keep your home dry and you won't have a mold problem—although, it is not always that easy!
Tips to keep your home dry to avoid mold:
- Before taking a bath, shower, or cooking a meal on the stove, turn on your exhaust fan. This will suck up any moisture and send it wherever the pipe leads which usually directs to your attic or out of your house through an external vent.
- Dry wet areas immediately! Ventilate, ventilate, ventilate!
- Monitor your humidity levels indoors with simple monitoring devices similar to thermometers. Use a dehumidifier to keep moisture levels between 30-50% which tends to be comfortable for most people.
- Clean and repair roof gutters to keep water flowing where you want it to go.
- Direct water away from your home by landscaping. Install a sump-pump in low-lying areas.
If you suspect mold in your Midland Texas home, contact SERVPRO of Lake Arlington today. Call us at (817) 460-7766. We are a local cleaning, restoration, and construction business in Lake Arlington, TX., and we specialize in mold remediation.

SERVPRO Removes Pet Odors
1/31/2022 (Permalink)
Don’t Live a Life Full of Unpleasant Smells.
Odors from smoke, pets, decomposition, or mold can cause lingering odors in your home or business. A simple surface clean doesn’t necessarily get rid of these smells. With technicians certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration (IICRC), SERVPRO provides specialized services that can rid your home or business of offensive odors left by smoke, mold, or other sources. Our professionals do not cover up lingering odors with a fragrance; they seek out and remove the odor's sources.
Once the source is found, we use SERVPRO’s proprietary line of cleaning products to treat and prevent the odor from returning. Any restorable item in affected areas will also be professionally cleaned and deodorized, including furniture, draperies and upholstery, electronics, art, flooring, walls, ceilings, HVAC air ducts, and more. Our proprietary line of cleaning products, SERVPRO of Lake Arlington, uses various techniques and equipment to treat odors.
These techniques are capable of penetrating surfaces to neutralize an unpleasant odor thoroughly.
Some of Our Tools to Neutralize Odors
Ozone Generator: The Ozone Generator is one of the quickest ways to eliminate odors from a home or office. We use the Ozone Generator to oxidize odor and eliminate odors from mold, mildew, pets, nicotine, smoke, and more without chemicals. Though the room being treated cannot be occupied while in use, the generator works quickly to clean, sanitize and remove offensive odors.
Hydroxyl Generator: The Hydroxyl Generator has several benefits that the Ozone Generator does not. The main benefit is that the room being treated can be occupied during the deodorization process, though it does work slower. The Hydroxyl Generator can be used to treat fire and smoke and biohazard jobs, water damage, crime scene situations, and animal odors.
Air Filtration Device: This piece of equipment, also known as an air scrubber, is used to remove airborne contaminants during water, fire, smoke, mold, and sewage restoration work. These work by pulling air through HEPA filtration to remove airborne particles from the air. This helps clean the air and remove odors.
Whether you are a building manager who needs an apartment cleaned for the next tenant or a homeowner who wants to get your home ready for sale, getting rid of offensive odors is a high priority.
Fire, water, or mold damage, or just a stubborn odor that refuses to go away, SERVPRO of Lake Arlington is here to help make it, “Like it never even happened.”
Does the Flu Still Exist? Yes.
1/31/2022 (Permalink)
Sneezing. Sniffling. Aching. Fever.
There is a lot of talk about viruses and the flu is one of those sicknesses in conversation. Yes, the flu still spreads and strikes quickly. However, you're not entirely defenseless. When it comes to flu prevention, we've got 5 tips for you – and they all involve the place where you likely spend your time: your home.
Wash your hands!
One of the single most important things you can do to prevent the flu virus's spread is to wash your hands. A great habit of getting into is washing your hands first thing when you get home. This will help to minimize the influx of viruses and bacteria that you may be carrying.
Change your dish towels regularly, or use a paper towel.
You and your family share more than you might realize. Stop sharing germs by making sure that you launder your towels regularly, or better yet, use disposable paper towels to minimize germ transfer from person to person.
Take out your humidifier.
The flu virus doesn't thrive in humid, warm environments, so up your defense by adding some moisture into the air.
Wipe down all hard surfaces
Flu germs float in the air, but they have to land somewhere! Disinfect hard surfaces like countertops, handles, faucets, light switches, and other frequently touched surfaces.
Bonus Tip: Look at your home from 'Kid-Level.'
Be sure to wipe down and disinfect areas your children have access to, including those lower cabinets you may have overlooked during your cleaning or the floors they may be crawling on.

Everyone knows a very high percentage of the rain that falls during the year falls in the spring. In Texas, we get through the storms and heavy rain by looking forward to the beautiful bluebonnets they help produce along our highways and rural fields.
Heavy rains can cause water damage in homes. Sometimes this damage occurs in a vacation home or in an area of the home that is not discovered until days, weeks, or months later, giving mold a chance to grow and really dig its roots.
Every mold damage scenario is different, and requires a unique solution, but the general mold remediation process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our “typical” process:
- Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment
- Mold Containment
- Air Filtration
- Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials
- Cleaning Contents and Belongings
- Restoration
SERVPRO of Lake Arlington is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week to help if you notice or suspect mold in your home or business. Call us today at 817-460-7766.
If you see visible mold, do not touch or disturb the mold or suspected mold growth. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home. We suggest you: stay out of affected areas, turn off the HVAC system and fans, and contact a mold professional.

What To Do After a House Fire
1/31/2022 (Permalink)
Your Texas home was likely not built to stop house fires before they spread to other areas of the house. In general, most of the materials used for the construction of your home are fire kindling, able to catch fire quickly and spread throughout the property. On top of that, the popular open-concept floor plan lays out the perfect environment for fires to spread from room to room more easily than other floor plans.
While flames do much damage on their own, other substantial effects of a fire are smoke and soot damages.
Soot Damages
Soot is most concentrated where it burned longest, but matted debris and film from the combustion leave a dark or black residue on surfaces, furniture, flooring, and other materials, too. Removing this residue requires multiple approaches. For wall surfaces, scrubbing with wet and dry sponges can often remove the bulk of the film. Confined spaces like ductwork require high powered vacuums.
Smoke Damages
Smoke damage often presents itself in the form of a harsh odor lingering in fabrics, carpeting, and open spaces throughout affected areas of your house. Removal of this odor typically requires thermal fogging, a process that releases an unscented chemical compound into the environment and contents of the room to break apart odor molecules and leave no discernible scent behind.
The Right Solution
Unfortunately, this causes a bigger mess than most people are equipped to handle. Fire damage proves to be challenging to remove without the right equipment. We always suggest hiring a professional fire cleanup and restoration expert. We may be biased, but SERVPRO is just that. We have the experience, tools, and techniques to help you through widespread fire, smoke, and soot damages.
When you face the effects after a house fire, SERVPRO of Lake Arlington responds quickly to get your home back to preloss conditions, as soon as possible.
Home Fires and Smoke Damage Aftermath
1/31/2022 (Permalink)
Fire Damage Consists of More Than Flames
The damages from flames after a fire are not the only damages incurred. Flames can move throughout the home quickly, burning and ruining every item in their path, but once the flames have been extinguished, the home is left with soot and smoke damages, too. Smoke damage can completely devastate a home if not properly and swiftly addressed. In fact, smoke damage can occur in rooms where the flames were not even present.
With so much attention placed on the flames, people often overlook the dangers linked to smoke damage. The following are some of the most common issues of smoke damage after a home fire:
- Toxic air
- Smoke odor in upholstered furniture, drapery, clothing, carpets, and in the air
- Charring
- Warped plastic
- Warped wood
- Yellow stains on walls and ceilings
- Household textiles covered in soot
Salvaging items that have smoke damage is a complicated issue. A smoke damage expert will need to assess the home and the impacted items to determine what can be saved. In addition, smoke damage experts will tackle lingering smoke in less obvious places like crevices and cracks where particles may linger, since the smell can last for months following a fire.
Smoke Damage is as Dangerous as Fire Damage
During a fire, the materials that burn produce toxic smoke filled with microscopic particles known as soot. These tiny particles become charged from the extreme heat and migrate to cooler air found in other parts of the house, forming soot webs. Because this smoke is often scorching, it can cause additional damage by melting plastics, scorching fabrics, and textiles and spreading toxic gasses that will kill any living thing in its path. That's why smoke alarms throughout your home are critical to saving lives.
Don’t Grab, Just Go.
The Department of Homeland Security says, "In less than 30 seconds, a small flame can [...] turn into a major fire…Most deadly fires occur in the home when people are asleep. If you wake up to a fire, you won't have time to grab valuables because the fire spreads too quickly, and the smoke is too thick. There is only time to escape."

Storm Aftermath: What's Next?
1/19/2022 (Permalink)
Dealing with repairs and insurance companies after severe weather hits your property can be difficult. Homeowners can use the following tips to help tackle the storm damage caused by hard rains, flooding, or storm-related issues.
Safety First
If you and your family were away from home when the storm hit, do not return until it has been confirmed safe. Contact a storm damage expert like SERVPRO of Lake Arlington; we'll help you determine if your home is safe to return to.
Insurance
You will need to contact your homeowners' insurance adjuster as soon as possible. If your neighborhood has sustained widespread damage, find out if any special teams of insurance agents, relief workers, or contractors are coming to the area. Check your policy to determine what actions you need to take or talk to your agent to make sure you are following the proper procedures. Not following these actions correctly could result in a reduced claim. Inspect your property and make a list of all damages; take photographs of all noted damage if at all possible.
Recording And Documenting
Document your neighbor's damages, as well; this can prevent the insurance provider from downgrading your claim by saying the damage is from your neglect of maintenance or other unrelated issues by giving them away to compare. Keep a record of all the communication you have with your insurance provider and don't do any unnecessary repair work yourself. Hire a trusted storm damage restoration service provider such as SERVPRO of Lake Arlington to handle any repairs.
Be Scam Free
Always check the adjuster's identification. If you are evacuated, ask for money from your claim upfront. If they agree, you will be given a check for an amount deducted from your final settlement. Some providers will automatically offer a partial payment early on during the process. Review it carefully and decline it if you feel uncomfortable with any part of it. Never be afraid to ask questions and to expect an answer that makes sense or seems fair.
Dealing with a storm's aftermath is stressful, but reacting quickly and effectively will prevent problems down the road.
SERVPRO of Lake Arlington is ready to help 24/7. Call us for your fire or water damage issues at (817) 460-7799.
3 Tips to Prevent Your Home From Wind Damage
1/19/2022 (Permalink)
Many areas in the United States have experienced heavy winds and storms this past year. The intense, powerful winds can cause significant damage to your home. Wind damage can cause a range of destruction to your property, from broken windows and fallen tree branches to severe damage to the roof, garage, or car. It can happen from the strong wind or indirectly from the wind blowing debris into your house.
Wind Damage from Different Types of Storms
Thunderstorms are the most common cause of wind and storm damage. However, winds from hurricanes or tornadoes are more robust and can cause severe damage. It can produce many types of adverse weather such as lightning, hail, tornadoes, straight-line winds, flooding, etc.
Thunderstorms are responsible for wind damage cases in the U.S. However, storm damage repair may be costly for hurricane or tornado wind damage. Billions of dollars are spent on wind damage repair and storm damage restoration each year. Understanding the nature of wind damage can help you limit the amount of damage to your property and save on restoration and repair costs.
It's important to know when and what type of storm is approaching in your area. You'll learn the potential level of damage to expect. These wind damage facts will help you better understand the likely wind damage and how to prevent it. Here are some steps you can take to minimize property damage when severe weather strikes.
Preventing Wind and Storm Damage
1. Flying Debris
Most wind damage starts with unsecured flying debris. If a storm is approaching your area, make sure any potential debris in your homes, such as patio furniture, toys, garbage cans, and other objects, are secured or brought inside. Secure your doors and windows to help minimize the potential storm damage to the home.
2. Roof Materials
Roofing material should latch to the deck. Loosely connected shingles will lift from the deck. Siding damage reduces at the construction phase. Fastened siding isn't as likely to lift off a structure in strong wind. Building codes will likely direct the minimum standards for connections. You, your architect, or your contractor may decide to exceed these minimums for a more robust storm-resistant structure.
Roof damage reduces during the construction phase when the roof deck, shingles, or membrane is applied over the decking. A well-designed roofing system will anchor the trusses and decking to the walls and foundation to keep the entire roof from lifting off the building in a strong wind.
3. Tree Maintenance
Tree maintenance to remove dead limbs or identify and remove weakened trees will reduce the likelihood of structural damage. Trees, at times, won't shift positions. If it does, it can shift and cause serious injury to the unwary. Roof openings and broken windows are the most common problem. Keep a roll of plastic sheeting that cuts to size and nails over the opening. Your insurance policy will likely cover the cost of an emergency close-up. Fallen trees may cause other severe safety issues, such as downed electrical wires. Contact your agent or claims center to report the damage and seek advice on how to proceed.
If your home or business sustains wind or storm damage, contact a restoration professional. SERVPRO of Lake Arlington can respond immediately to storm and flooding conditions. Our quick response will help prevent secondary damage and help reduce restoration costs. Call us 24/7 at (817) 460-7766.
Storm Damage vs Flood Damage: Know the Difference for Your Insurance
1/19/2022 (Permalink)
Property owners in Lake Arlington, Texas, may have a hard time differentiating storm damage from flood damage. Commercial properties can sustain water damage from either source. There're a few significant differences to keep in mind that may help you manage these risks.
The most general distinction is that stormwater comes from above, whereas flood water overspills natural bodies or watercourses and covers at least two acres of ordinarily dry land.
Storm damage to a commercial property may originate from a variety of causes such as:
- High winds
- Heavy rain
- Hurricanes
- Snow
- Tornadoes
Most business insurance plans protect from storm damage. Property owners need additional coverage to offset the expenses of flood damage. If your property is located on a flood plain, you should make sure you carry the policies necessary to protect your investment.
Flooding occurs when water overflows a body of water or watercourse such as:
- Creeks
- Dams
- Lakes
- Storm-water channels
For water to be considered a flood, it must cover two acres and affect at least two properties. If a commercial property is located in a high-risk zone, and the owner has a mortgage from an insured and federally-regulated lender, they must maintain flood insurance. Damage resulting from either flooding or storms can cause severe problems and should be planned for, prevented, and handled as soon as possible. Regardless of a moisture source, the risk of mold and other secondary damage within a building can be just as severe.
Restoring Damage From Storms and Floods
Restoration specialists can help property owners determine the precise causes of damage and the best solutions. If a commercial property in Lake Arlington, Texas, experiences flood damage or sustains damage during a storm, contact SERVPRO of Arlington at (817) 460-7766 as soon as possible.
Know How to Identify the Source of a Leaky Roof
1/5/2022 (Permalink)
Find Your Leaky Roof Source Quickly
After a significant storm, it's a good idea to inspect your damaged property as quickly as you can. Your home's main line of defense is your roof, and it takes a beating. Pay attention to dings in your gutters or tears in your window screens, which indicate hail damage. You may also see missing shingle tiles from the ground, but those don't always represent a need for whole roof replacement. Usually, the leak is coming from a more minor roof feature.
At SERVPRO of Lake Arlington, we:
- Find the source of the leak
- Stop the leak &
- Clean the water damage.
Find the Leak
During storms in Texas, wind damage can let rain in through your roof. From the inside, look for water stains on your ceiling and walls that indicate the leak.
Common places to see leaky roof damage:
- Vents and fans
- Chimneys
- Window dormers
- Vent pipes
- Unsecured nails and nail holes
Dealing with Water Damage
- Check for discolorations and rotting wood, wet drywall, and insulation.
- If you haven't found mold, start drying any wet materials immediately. Complete drying is critical to preventing mold, and it may take longer than you realize.
- If you find mold, remain careful to not spread it during cleanup. Mold grows on wet, damaged materials in as little as 48 hours. A mold remediation professional creates a containment area while working on the water and mold damage. Specialists have monitoring equipment that they use to ensure materials are dry.
For more assistance, call a local construction, restoration, and mold remediation crew likeSERVPRO of Lake Arlington at (817) 460-7766.
When was the Last Time you Cleaned your Air Ducts?
1/5/2022 (Permalink)
Ventilation systems are often the biggest culprit in low indoor air quality. Make it a priority to inspect the ductwork of your Texas home or business.
If your HVAC has been operating for some time without attention, it could be circulating the following:
- Dust
- Pollen
- Odors
- Dirt and debris
- Other contaminants
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used in homes for heating or cooling is wasted. Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder and shorten your system's life. Although filters are used, the heating and cooling system still gets dirty through normal use.
When an HVAC system is clean, it doesn't have to work as hard to maintain the temperature you desire. As a result, less energy is used, leading to improved cost-effectiveness.
In addition to normal accumulations of dust and dirt found in all homes with air ducts, several other factors can increase the need for regular HVAC system cleaning:
- Pets
- Occupants with allergies or asthma
- Cigarette or cigar smoke
- Water contamination or damage to the home or HVAC system
- Home renovation or remodeling projects
Some occupants are more sensitive to these contaminants than others. Allergy and asthma sufferers and young children, and the elderly, tend to be more susceptible to the types of low indoor air quality that air duct cleaning can help address.
SERVPRO of Lake Arlington professionals routinely inspects the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning unit (HVAC). Keeping them clean can extend the life of the equipment. This can save you money and give you cleaner air to breathe. For additional information on HVAC and air duct cleaning, call us today, (817) 460-7766.

Prevent Holiday Fires
3/12/2021 (Permalink)
The upcoming holiday season brings traditions, parties, shopping, entertaining – and potential danger.
The latest statistics available from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) show the holidays are a high-risk time for home fires. Christmas trees are responsible for 240 home fires each year, and other holiday decorations cause another 1,170 fires. Thanksgiving Day sees almost a threefold increase in cooking-related fires; cooking fires are almost twice as likely to happen on Christmas Day as on non-holidays.
“No one wants to think about the possibility of losing their home, and even more tragically, lives because of a fire during the holidays,” said Rick Isaacson, CEO of SERVPRO Industries, Inc. “But statistics show, it’s important to be aware of the increased risk seasonal decorating, entertaining and cooking can cause during the holidays.”
Isaacson reminds homeowners that prevention and common sense can help keep homes and families safe during the holidays and throughout the year. Here are some sobering facts about holiday fires and tips to help keep your home, friends, and family safe throughout the holiday season.
Christmas Tree Fire Facts
- Electrical problems cause 33% of tree fires; 13% involve decorative lights. Check wiring on lights for breaks and wear. Replace worn strings and don’t exceed manufacturer guidelines for connecting multiple strands of lights. Don’t leave tree lights plugged in when you are away from home or go to bed.
- 42% occur on the 12 days from December 23 through January 3. Keep live trees well watered to reduce the chance of a fire.
Holiday Decoration Fire Facts
- 45% of all holiday fires involve candles; that number rises to 56% in December. Use flameless candles. If you do use traditional candles, burn them in sturdy candleholders, well away from drapes and other flammable materials, and never leave them unattended or allow them to burn down to less than one inch in length.
- 48% of all decoration fires start because the decoration is too close to a heat source. Keep all decorations away from heat sources like radiators, portable heaters, fireplaces, etc.
Cooking Fire Facts
- Cooking fires on Thanksgiving Day exceed the daily average by 272%. Supervise items on the stovetop. 58% of kitchen fires involve ranges; homes with electric cooktops have a higher risk of fire than homes with gas cooktops.
- Cooking fires on Christmas Day and Christmas Eve exceed the daily average by 96% and 89%, respectively. Keep flammable items – potholders, packaging, wrapping, wooden utensils, loose clothing – away from the stovetop. Don’t let lack of sleep or alcohol consumption affect your ability to concentrate on preparing the meal.
“It only takes a moment’s distraction or carelessness to turn a holiday celebration into a catastrophe,” said Isaacson. “We hope these tips will be a reminder to families everywhere to make fire prevention a priority in their holiday preparations, so they can spend the season enjoying family and friends, not dealing with the aftermath of a fire.”

Winterize Your Home
3/10/2021 (Permalink)
Winter in Texas can be a gamble. Some years are mild and warm, while others leave us iced in for days. Nevertheless, it's essential to take a few preventative measures to protect your home through the chilly months. Winterizing is generally a task that can be done relatively inexpensively, will make a big difference in how comfortable your home is, help prevent fire and water damage, and could even save you money on those utility bills!
Here is some way you can get a jump start on winter weather conditions:
- Clean gutters and downspouts in mid-fall and double-check them before winter.
- Replace the filter in your furnace.
- Close any vents in your home that may have been opened for the warm weather.
- Disconnect hoses from outside faucets and turn off the water.
- Buy a snow shovel and other winter supplies before the messy weather hits.
- Keep extra water and canned food in storage just in case.
- Test your heating system so that you know it will work properly when you need it.
- Give your deck a fresh coat of sealer to protect it from the winter elements.
- Keep outside faucets covered when not in use.
- If it's below freezing, leave kitchen cabinets open and water dripping to avoid a pipe freeze.
We Do Mold Remediation
2/5/2021 (Permalink)
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Chemical Sponges
2/5/2021 (Permalink)
Chemical sponges are for the removal of dry dirt, dust, and dry smoke soot residues. Our SERVPRO team uses these sponges on all of our fire jobs while cleaning. If our team needs to reach high ceilings we have poles that hold the chemical sponges up high so we can reach those areas. This is a very good way to get soot residue off of walls and ceilings. You never want to wipe fire soot off with a wet sponge, it will only smear more! We use a dry sponge for that very reason. Although, chemical sponges should not be used with protein fires because they will only smear them more. Our technicians are certified in fire restoration and we have the perfect chemicals for any size job.

The ozone room works by utilizing an electrical current and breaks down odors. The ozone room is a very important tool that SERVPRO of Lake Arlington utilizes when cleaning contents and deodorizing because it kills the odors at the source without using harsh chemicals.
Here is the science behind the ozone room: Normal oxygen is mixed with an electrical current such as lightning transforming normal oxygen into activated oxygen. The activated oxygen is what cleans the air, contents, etc. This is why it always smells so fresh outside after a thunderstorm! The activated oxygen from the electrical currents is cleaning the air naturally! Electricity is nature's way of cleaning the air.
Preparing for Tornado Season
2/3/2021 (Permalink)
Did you know Texas has the highest average annual number of tornadoes in the US? That's right, an average of 132 tornadoes touch Texas soil each year!
Tornado season typically runs from March to June, however, tornadoes are capable of being produced year-round. Make sure you and your family get prepared ahead of time, as tornadoes can be unpredictable.
Find the Safest Place in Your Home
It’s important to know the best place to go when a tornado hits. Find a space where there are no or few windows, away from breakables. If you have a basement, cellar or storm shelter, head there immediately. In one-floor structures, go to a small, interior space, such as a closet or under a stairwell. If possible, an interior bathroom in the tub could provide extra protection.
You should discuss where the safe place is with every member of your family, so they know where to go in the event of an emergency.
#2 Gather Supplies
Put together an emergency kit with these items:
- One gallon of water per person, per day, for at least three days
- Enough non-perishable food to last each person for three days
- A battery-powered weather radio
- Several flashlights
- Extra batteries
- Prescription medications
- First Aid kit
- Clothes and closed-toed shoes for every person
Lake Arlington Wildfire Damage Event
2/2/2021 (Permalink)
The active wildfires here in Southern California are increasing their impact as growing Santa Ana winds add fuel to these devastating blazes that are encroaching in our area. According to the New York Times, new fires broke out in Malibu on December 7, with at least 96,000 acres already burned in the Ventura area and 116,000 acres in Los Angeles County. Evacuations have closed hundreds of schools and forced 200,000 of our neighbors to seek safety. The “Thomas Fire” in the Ventura area continues to burn with the aid of strong winds. This fire has caused the closure of the 101 freeway and a boil-water advisory was issued for Ventura County.
Santa Ana winds
The Santa Ana winds that are enabling the fires to rapidly increase their reach can have speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour. They are not expected to diminish until Friday into Saturday at the earliest. The National Weather Service has warned of “very rapid fire growth” in this area. SERVPRO Meteorologist Lela Davis said that the Santa Ana winds were already very dry when they reached the Southern California valley, allowing them to quickly pull moisture out of vegetation, increasing the risk for wildfires. For the first time ever, a purple wind warning was issued for today under the color-coded system used to advise about high winds. This purple warning pushed wind expectations from the “high” category to “extreme”.

Conditions in Lake Arlington Might Be Right For Mold
2/1/2021 (Permalink)
It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, certain species of mold can cause health effects for some people.
If the right conditions exist, mold will grow. Those conditions include:
- Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
- Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
- Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.
Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.
If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Lake Arlington to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools, and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.
If you suspect mold, call us today at 817-460-7766
What to Do:

Does Your Lake Arlington Home Have Mold Problems?
1/27/2021 (Permalink)
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise mold removal and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy.

- 6 of 7 days with at least a trace of snow, sleet, freezing rain, or freezing drizzle from February 22-28
